"I was sent this book by the publishers, and avoided blogging on it, mainly because I usually only review books I find helpful, and I wondered what purpose reviewing is unfavorably would serve. Then I read this post on Tony Jones blog, about whether Emergent was moving beyond the orthodox, and that got me thinking about where the boundaries are for our discussions."

They've also sent me a copy and I do intend to review it. It's in the queue.
Looking forward to your review Stephen.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if this one will be helpful, but it sure is provocative. I'm enjoying it, sort of.
ReplyDeleteStephen,
ReplyDeleteI have been working through the book and I do agree that it has a lot of generalization.
I do wonder if the issue is not that Spencer is going beyond orthodoxy, rather he is using words that have meanings that we are not comfortable with, such as Universalism...
I believe in universal forgiveness, that all were forgiven at the Cross, yet I do not see all are 'saved' at the cross... Spencer expressed to me in a comment that maybe he and I are saying the same thing... just that we are approaching it from different views. I am still thinking about that comment. I do in a way see that the “Opt out” idea is a bit tough to grasp yet again; I do see where he is coming from.
I too look forward to your review…
Blessings,
iggy
