Every 3 Seconds

June ONE Days
Jun 01 2005

ONE launches countdown to the G8 Africa Summit with local artist communities around the country.

On June ONE, local artists from around the country will raise their voices and join the more than three quarters of a million Americans fighting to end the emergency of global AIDS and extreme poverty.

In 20 cities nationwide, local artists from musicians and museums to art galleries and music stores will support ONE and distribute ONE Whitebands to patrons -- the symbol of our campaign. Music showcases and gallery walks are planned to engage the local community to take action. These events will launch an unprecedented mobilization of Americans calling on President Bush to deliver a historic deal for the world's poor at the Africa Summit of the G8 in July.

Last night, Beth, Michaela, Skye, Alia and I went to a One Event in the District and heard a brief talk, heard some music and saw a wonderous dance. By then our 9,7 and 5 year olds had been as still as they could be and we left!

Afterwards I ordered Jeffrey Sachs' The End of Poverty and Ron Sider's Rich Christians in an Age of Hunger.

I've long known of Sider but Beth turned me onto Sachs after reading this.

I have a lot to learn.
