Brown: The Ancient History of "The Da Vinci Code" is Factual

WERTHEIMER: How long does it take you to research a book like this? I assume that, among other things, you would hear from the world if you’ve got anything wrong.

Mr. BROWN: Certainly. And it takes me about two and a half years to entirely research and write a book like this. Before I even started writing a page, I’d spent a year in research, and a lot of the research for “Angels and Demons” that I did in Vatican City played into this book, as well as my art history training in Seville.

WERTHEIMER: You’re trying not to get too fictional with the facts here?

Mr. BROWN: Absolutely. The only thing fictional in “The Da Vinci Code” is the characters and the action that takes place. All of the locations, the paintings, the ancient history, the secret documents, the rituals, all of this is factual.

Amy Welborn posts this from an April 2003 interview that National Public Radio's Linda Wertheimer did with Dan Brown on Weekend Edition.

There is a way to verify the truth...

Hello Stephen and all,

Yes, the DaVinci Code is a novel and its version of history is no better than that in the New Testament. In other words, neither is the literal truth, and that is a key point of the story. The primary sub-plot was about purposeful symbology being used to encode hidden meanings, just like the Bible and related texts.

Want to know why we can't let the Vatican succeed at telling us what to think about ancient history? There is a way to verify the truth and that is precisely what the Vatican doesn't want you to understand. If the Bible represented the literal truth and accurate history, there would be no need for faith in the assertions of deceptive and duplicitous clergy and their ilk.

It is undeniable the New Testament is framed by symbolism and allegory. The same is evidenced in the Dead Sea Scrolls, Gnostic texts, biblical apocrypha, and other related texts. All ancient religious, mystical, and wisdom texts have been shrouded in mystery for millennia for one primary reason: The ability to understand their widely evidenced symbology was lost in antiquity. How do we finally solve these ages-old mysteries? To recast an often-used political adage: It’s [the] symbology, stupid!

It's amazing the Vatican still tries to insist the Gospels are literal truth. It is beyond obvious they are replete with ancient Hebrew symbology. Every miracle purported for Jesus has multiple direct symbolic parallels in the Old Testament, Apocalypse, Dead Sea Scrolls, and other symbolic narratives and traditions.

Likewise, the following Washington Post article ( The Book of Bart) describes how many changes and embellishments were made to these texts over the centuries, unequivocally demonstrating they are not original, infallible, or truthful.

What then is the purpose of "faith" but to keep good people from seeking to understand truth and wisdom? It's no wonder the Vatican fears the truth more than anything else. Now comes justice, hot on its heels... (symbolism...)

Seven Star Hand-
Well your comments are interesting. Even though I disagree with your assesment of the New Testament it is not necessary to talk about it to point you to some potential problems with your post. First if you haven't read Stephen's links regarding the History in the Da Vinci Code please check it out. I think that you might find out that the book and may I assume the movie if it is accurate to the book has more than just symbology in it. It makes historical claims. In the interview Brown is saying that his history is accurate. Well if you do the research. It's not.

One simple point in the book is the expert (in the book) claims that the Christian church did not believe in the diety of Christ unitl the council of Nicea. That is just factually wrong. Even liberial scholars would date the apostle Paul's writings at least 150 years before Nicea. If you read Paul it is pretty hard to believe that he did not believe in the diety of Christ and that he taught it to his churchs? He planted many churches in the first century and wrote about the diety of Christ.

Regardless symbolism does play a big role in the bible. That does not make it any less believable or true for that matter.

To Seven Stars Hand:

You state at the outset of your post that "there is a way to verify the truth." This is correct, but it's not the way you think. While I wouldn't be surprised at much of any revelation of the nefarious motives of the Vatican, the claims you make on your Web site about Jesus Christ and the New Testament being "blatant lies" etc. have already been disproven by Christ himself through his union with millions of his people, and your own claim to being the Messiah and Melchizedek reincarnated will be disproven soon enough.

Time to repent, my friend. Christ said the Scripture cannot be broken, and it never has been - even by you. Give it up, while you still can.
